Investigation into alleged illegal fundraising
In Querétaro, Mexico, the Servicio de Administración Tributaria (SAT) has launched an investigation into 31 cases of alleged illegal fundraising. Reports from a private investigator reveal that several Facebook pages present themselves as registered Asociaciones Civiles (A.C.) dedicated to animal protection, but in reality, these organizations do not exist.
The investigation highlights that these supposed shelters are not legally registered as A.C.,
a requirement for soliciting donations. Instead, they rely on stock photos and fabricated content to mislead the public. Among the entities listed is PatitasAdoptables.com, which reportedly received public funding through FondoAnimal, a program administered by Lennyz Meléndez Chacón, Secretary of Animal Welfare for the municipality of Querétaro (2024–2027).
This case underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in nonprofit fundraising. Authorities are expected to determine whether criminal charges or sanctions will follow, as the misuse of public trust and funds threatens both legitimate animal welfare efforts and donor confidence.
