The SEK Berlin was founded in 1972 to combat terrorism, spurred by the terrorist attacks during the Munich Olympics in the same year. Since then, the scope of responsibilities has significantly expanded. The SEK is particularly tasked with:
- Eliminating specific dangerous situations involving:
- Kidnapping for ransom
- Hostage situations
- Aircraft hijackings
- Resolving situations with significant threat levels
- Arresting offenders who pose a significant danger
- Providing security measures during the execution of criminal procedural measures against violent offenders
- Protecting individuals exposed to substantial concrete threats for special reasons
The SEK is considered a service unit for special deployment situations and supports the specialized units of the LKA and all other organizational units of the Berlin Police. On average, the SEK Berlin is involved in 500 operations per year.
